DeBerry up to four offers

Ricky DeBerry is one of the top 2015 prospects in Virginia. The Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher's standout is already generating a lot of buzz on the recruiting trail.

Ricky DeBerry had a breakout season in 2012. Despite his high level of play, DeBerry said the season did not go as well as he expected.

"We finished 5-5," said Deberry. "We didn't finish the way we wanted to. Coming off last season when we the lost in the state championship game, we thought we would come out this year with a lot of motivation and confidence, but we came up short."

DeBerry moved from linebacker to defensive end this season and felt good about the way he played.

"I think I performed very well, being that it was my first time playing defensive end," said the 6-foot-3, 235-pound DeBerry. "I made a lot of plays from the weak-side of the defense. Not many plays came my way, but I was able to run some plays down and prevent some big plays also."

East Carolina, North Carolina, Purdue and Virginia have already extended scholarship offers and other schools are showing interest in the talented sophomore.

"I've been getting interest from LSU, Penn State, some stuff from Arizona lately," he said. "I've also heard from Maryland and Virginia Tech."

A school in the Big Ten is showing the most interest in the St. Christopher's star.

"Recently, I would say Penn State has been in contact with me the most – keeping me up to date on all their players – sending me information about their camps. I really feel like they have been showing me a lot of love lately."

As far as visits, DeBerry has already planned to camp at Alabama, LSU, and maybe USC. He will also likely make trips to Virginia, North Carolina, Purdue, Virginia Tech, and Maryland over the next several months.

For now, DeBerry is focused on becoming better player.

"Right now, I'm just working on my overall strength and speed every day because I want to be able to compete at the highest level," he said.

DeBerry said most schools are recruiting him as a hybrid defensive end/linebacker.
