Taylor Working Toward Enrollment

CHATHAM, Va. --- North Carolina pledge Monte Taylor recently received the test results from his first attempt at the SAT and ACT since enrolling at Hargrave Military Academy.

Taylor, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound defensive end, says his scores improved but came up just short of qualifying status. He'll retake the ACT this Saturday.

"I am going to get my scores to be qualified," Taylor said. "My grades are improving and my teachers are helping me realize the strategies for the ACT and SAT."

Additionally, Taylor's core GPA figures to receive a boost once his first semester grades are revealed in early January.

Judging by their actions, the UNC coaching staff also believes that Taylor will be qualified in time to enroll in January. Of UNC's verbal commitments, only the pledges who are expected to enroll in the spring semester are taking their official visit prior to January. At the coaches' request, Taylor is scheduled to officially visit UNC during the weekend of Dec. 15.

"I'm happy that they are showing confidence in me, because I'm confident that I'll be qualified," Taylor said.

Taylor says he speaks weekly to Deke Adams, UNC's defensive line coach, and Marcus Berry, UNC's Director of Player Personnel.

"They're just saying a couple of D-linemen are leaving and they need somebody to come in ready to play," Taylor said. "I told Coach that I'm going to come in and do the best to try to get on the field."

UNC defensive linemen Adam Curry and Sylvester Williams, as well as Bandit Dion Guy, have exhausted their eligibility.

Taylor's Dec. 15 official visit will be his second official trip to UNC. As a senior at Springdale (Md.) Flowers, he officially visited UNC during the last weekend of January. It was during that visit that Larry Fedora offered Taylor a scholarship with the caveat that he'd spend the fall '12 semester at Hargrave regardless of his qualifying status.

"It's going to be nice to get away from Hargrave," Taylor said of the upcoming official visit. "So I'll take it when I can get it.

"I want to see more of Chapel Hill instead of just the school. I want to see the whole atmosphere outside of the school. When I went on my last [official] visit, I was mostly on campus. Hopefully, this time I'll be able to see the town and everything."

Taylor says he has no plans to officially visit any other school.
